5 Reasons to get your child’s vision checked

Have you made an appointment for an eye exam in Kitchener for your child yet? According to the Canadian Association of Optometrists, children should have their first eye exam between six and nine months old and the second exam by three years of age or earlier if there is any suspected vision issues. Here are five reasons to get your child’s vision checked.

    1. Younger Children Can’t Tell You When There’s a Problem
Unfortunately, small children have no way of knowing that there is a problem with their eyes, let alone communicate that problem to you. Early eye exams will detect vision issues that you may not even realize are present. The earlier your child’s vision can be corrected with eyeglasses, the better their chances are at developing at a normal pace.
    2. Vision Problems Can Effect Development
Untreated vision problems can deter your child from learning and developing at a healthy pace. Preschool age children who have untreated vision problems have trouble seeing and comprehending lessons from their teachers which can inhibit literacy and even social skills.
    3. Possible Behaviour Issues
When children can’t express what’s going on in their bodies, they tend to act out. A child with untreated vision issues may be acting out from the frustration of not being able to see probably and not understanding why. An early eye exam will be able to rule out any vision or eye problems as a source of behaviour issues.
    4. Easier Acceptance of Vision Corrective Wear
Wearing eyeglasses for the first time can be nerve-racking for an adult, let alone a child. An older child may be embarrassed or nervous to wear glasses in front of their peers for the first time. The earlier you’re able to have your child adapt to his or her new situation, the easier it will be for them to accept it as normal.
    5. Healthy Habits for Life
If your child is in the habit of seeing doctors regularly for checkups they are more likely to continue this routine for their entire life. We teach by example and there’s nothing more impactful than showing your child they should take care of their eyes as well as their entire bodies.

If your child hasn’t seen an eye doctor yet or you suspect there may be a problem with their vision, schedule an eye exam in Kitchener right away by calling us at 519-744-7400 or book an appointment online now.
